DOMAINE DE CHANTILLY

 Artsy château ! A mere 30-minute train ride from Paris takes you to the royal setting of the Domaine de Chantilly. Bequeathed to the Institut de France in 1897 by its former owner, the Duke d’Aumale, the Renaissance-style chateau houses the second-largest collection of master paintings in France after the Louvre. In addition to works by Watteau, Delacroix and Raphaël, visitors can now enjoy a summer exhibition on Ingres. The Domaine o¬ers a host of activities for visitors eager to enjoy its royal splendour: dress up as a princess or prince for a guided tour; follow a workshop on to make Chantilly cream; hunt for treasure in the sprawling French gardens (for 6-12 year olds) or take a rowboat out on the lake. You can also admire the domaine’s famous equestrian shows, from July 12 to August 20 under the dome of the famous Grand Stables. Admission from €17 (€30 with the show). — Château de Chantilly (60).
